THE JESUIT LEGACY IN COLONIAL PIAUÍ: IMPACTS AND INFLUENCES IN PIAUÍ (1696-1711)

Abstract

During the colonial period in Brazil, the Jesuits played a crucial role in the spread of Christianity, education and the social organization of communities. In Piauí, between 1696 and 1711, their presence significantly influenced colonial society, leaving a legacy that shaped important aspects. This study analyzes the impacts of the Jesuits in this period, highlighting their contributions to education, culture and religion in the region. The methodology adopted was bibliographic and qualitative, using historical documents, traveler reports and academic studies. The Jesuits established missions and schools that played a fundamental role in the education and catechization of indigenous people, in addition to influencing social and political organization, contributing to the formation of agricultural communities and the dissemination of European culture. Its architectural legacy is still visible in the churches and residences that make up Piauí's historic heritage. However, their actions also generated conflicts with other religious orders and colonial authorities, culminating in the expulsion of the Jesuits from Brazil in 1759. Recognizing this complex influence is essential to understanding the historical and cultural formation of the region, being an integral part of the history of colonial Brazil and object of study for historians and researchers.
