Abstract

This article aimed to discuss the role of the pharmacist in preventing bacterial resistance in hospital-acquired infections. It was a descriptive, explanatory literature review with a qualitative approach that aimed to analyze studies related to the pharmacist's role in controlling bacterial resistance in hospital-acquired infections. The research was conducted in the Scielo, Google Scholar, BVS, and PubMed databases. Articles published between 2015 and 2025 were included. The analyzed research showed that bacterial resistance is directly linked to the inappropriate use of antimicrobials, particularly in hospitals. It was found that the pharmacist's intervention plays an important role in promoting the rational use of antibiotics, reducing therapeutic errors, and improving clinical outcomes. Furthermore, their participation in the Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC) and in initiatives such as health education and pharmacovigilance was essential to reduce the spread of resistant microorganisms and increase patient safety. In conclusion, the pharmacist's role is fundamental in combating bacterial resistance in hospital infections, assisting in the responsible use of antimicrobials, increasing patient safety, and improving the quality of healthcare.
