Abstract

The influence of the prison system on the restriction of liberty has a profound effect on the mental health of inmates, as well as affecting their possibilities of reintegration into society after serving their sentence. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of deprivation of liberty on the psychological health of prisoners, with an emphasis on detention conditions, social isolation, and stigmatization after release from prison, and how these aspects affect social reintegration. To this end, the research employed a literature review methodology, examining academic articles, books, and theses that address the psychological and social consequences of incarceration. The findings reveal that deprivation of liberty is a factor that significantly contributes to the emergence of mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Overcrowding and the scarcity of access to rehabilitation programs intensify the situation, hindering the recovery of inmates and increasing the risk of criminal recidivism. The research concludes that it is necessary to implement substantial reforms in the prison system to promote the mental health and social reintegration of inmates. Psychological support measures and initiatives aimed at reducing social stigma are fundamental to breaking the cycle of marginalization and recidivism.
