Abstract

The ability of natural teeth to withstand masticatory loads results from the structural interrelation between enamel and dentin. Dentists must be knowledgeable about techniques to replicate this structural relationship when dealing with teeth with significant tissue loss. Indirect restorative processes are used in these case however, dentin exposure during preparation poses a more complex adhesion challenge compared to enamel. To prevent adhesion failures of restorative materials on preparations, immediate dentin sealing (IDS) must be implemented, which involves applying the adhesive system to dentin tissue immediately after preparation and before impression. Dentin under these conditions is free from contaminants, making it an optimal surface for such adhesive procedures. IDS is one of the principles of biomimetic dentistry, aiming to perform restorative procedures capable of reproducing living tissues, such as enamel and dentin. The objective is to conduct a literature review analyzing the effectiveness of IDS and the benefits the technique can offer A bibliographic review was carried out to analyze the effectiveness of IDS on dentin surface, using articles from the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library (SciELO), and Brazilian Journal of Development platforms. It was concluded that evidence in the literature advocates for the use of adhesive systems on dentin surfaces exposed prior to impression, reducing adhesion failures and thus allowing for greater longevity of partial restorations. It is also important to note that IDS facilitates the reduction of pre- and post-operative sensitivity. It is also worth highlighting, that it is possible to apply IDS through conventional and self-etching adhesive approaches.
