Abstract

Congenital syphilis is an infectious disease that affects newborns and is transmitted from an infected mother during pregnancy. The objective of this article is to evaluate the costs of hospital admissions for congenital syphilis in Brazil. For this, studies that used different methodologies to assess the direct and indirect costs of the disease were reviewed. The results show that congenital syphilis has significant impacts on the health system and society, including hospital costs, lost productivity and emotional and social impact on families. The analysis of the costs of hospital admissions for congenital syphilis revealed that most of the hospitalized patients were female, newborns and children younger than 1 year. Total hospitalization costs were high and the average hospital stay was approximately 15 days. These results highlight the importance of preventive measures, early diagnosis and adequate treatment of congenital syphilis, as well as the need for planning effective health policies to reduce its incidence and economic and social impact in Brazil.
