This article addresses the training of indigenous teachers since 1991, when the Ministry of Education – MEC, conducted the education processes, together with the indigenous peoples of the State of Tocantins. To this end, bibliographic research was carried out in books, dissertations, articles and documents in various governmental spheres, on experiences and public policies for the formation of indigenous peoples. In this context, the training policy for indigenous teachers in the State of Tocantins, the teacher training course: Indigenous Education Project for the State of Tocantins and the Proposal for the Training of Indigenous Teachers of the State of Tocantins are presented. Writing this article sets up the fulfillment of a desire that I have long nurtured in my heart and interest in this theme has been attributed to the need to offer a quality education and in the search for a model of indigenous training, capable of articulating the demands of teacher qualification and appreciation of indigenous culture in the school curriculum.
