This course conclusion work in Degree in Daytime Pedagogy at the Federal University of Santa Maria has as its theme the child and childhood. The general objective of the research is to understand the place of play conceived by some teachers of the Early Years of Elementary Education in a public school in Nova Palma/RS. In order to answer these questions, it was necessary to analyze the answers obtained in the distribution of a questionnaire to teachers of the 1st and 2nd years of the initial years of a municipal school in Nova Palma/RS. Through the answers it was found that they are aware of the importance of play for child development, the importance of respecting the child as a social being, taking into account the child as a child and their individualities. On the other hand, it is noticed that most of the time there are ruptures in the transition from kindergarten to elementary school, where the right to play begins to decrease, that is, more time is devoted to reading, writing and mathematics activities. That is why it is necessary to discuss with parents, teachers and institutions to the point of reaching a consensus on how important it is to value playing, the creation of school practices that value the first years of schooling, considering the time of each child, and their effective involvement.
