Abstract

This article aims to present the importance of initiatives for the insertion of girls and women into the STEM area in Brazil. Although the presence of women in science has increased globally, in the scientific and technological system there is a small number of women in certain areas or sub-areas of knowledge, such as exact sciences and engineering. In this way, it is necessary to encourage children and young people for scientific careers, and the Brazilian State has the fundamental role of promoting actions so that girls can have contact with science, technology and innovation from the most basic cycles of education. In order to induce the increase of women in STEM careers, some initiatives were implemented in Brazil. Thus, it is expected that the initiatives can be transformed into a public policy that aims to produce the horizontal and vertical segregation of women in the STEM areas.
