Lip brakes have the function of limiting the movement or part of the movement of the lip to which it is attached, i.e., limiting part of the lip movement by preventing exaggerated movements. The presence of abnormal brakes can lead to orthodontic, prosthetic, phonetic and periodontal complications. In view of this, the purpose of this paper is to carry out a literature review on the labial frenum, referring to its diagnosis, consequences of its presence and indications for surgical intervention. The methods used to prepare this work were a bibliographic research about the proposed theme in the SciElo and PubMed databases. The selected scientific articles were complete, written in Portuguese or English, published between 2010 and 2022. The treatment for brakes is through surgery that aims to eliminate excess tissue, reduce tension in the marginal gingival tissues, aid stability and prevent recurrence of diastema, and restore the anatomy of the region, thereby improving aesthetics and avoiding periodontal problems. Through this study, it was observed that in order to have a correct diagnosis of abnormal lip brakes, the clinical signs should be visualized, and the choice of technique and age should be analyzed according to the needs of each patient.
