Abstract

The present work was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of essential oils extracted from Azadirachta indica and Ricinus communis L on Anopheles spp and Aedes spp. The tests were carried out in the biological laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences - Universidade Agostinho Neto in air-conditioned rooms at a temperature of 25 ± 2º C. To obtain the populations of Anopheles spp and Aedes spp, portions of water containing larvae and eggs were collected directly from breeding sites. existing in the district of Sambizanga and traps were used to collect larvae and eggs in the municipality of Viana, and district of Maianga. To obtain the essential oils, the cold pressing method described by PINHEIRO, 2003 was used. The larvae obtained were counted, separated and transferred to disposable transparent plastic cups with a capacity of 100 ml containing 30 ml of water, counting 15 larvae per cup. Mortality was verified for Anopheles spp larvae after 12, 24, and 36 hours and for Aedes spp larvae at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 days of exposure to the treatment. It was found that at all tested concentrations of essential oils from plant species of Ricinus communis L and Azadirachta indica caused 100% mortality of the Anopheles spp larvae population in 24 hours, with an LC100 of 947 ppm. While on Aedes spp larvae, greater efficiency was observed in the joint action of essential oils causing mortality of 100% of the population at a concentration of 947 ppm in 4 days.
