Hysterectomy is the second most common non-obstetric gynecological surgery in the female population where the uterus is removed as a consequence of some pathologies such as uterine fibroids, pelvic organ prolapse, abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine cancer and adenomyosis. There are several approaches for performing this surgical procedure, including the abdominal and vaginal route. The objective of the present study was to analyze some aspects related to hospitalization for vaginal hysterectomy, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, during the period from November 2015 to November 2020. The study is observational, cross-sectional and retrospective through a data collection from the Department of Information and Informatics of the SUS (DATASUS) during the last five years in Rio de Janeiro. The data collected were the number of hospitalizations per year of vaginal hysterectomy, the average cost of each hospitalization and its average duration. The results found were a total of 2187 hospitalizations for vaginal hysterectomy in the mentioned period and region, with the average cost of each hospitalization of R$558.84 and the average length of hospitalization of 3.4 days. With the present study, it was possible to highlight the advantages of the vaginal approach compared to other hysterectomy approaches, and that it should be further studied and disseminated among gynecological surgeons.
