Abstract

This article aims to discuss the emerging global issue of plastic waste, especially waste in the marine environment and its consequences. From a qualitative approach, we propose a theoretical discussion in which quantitative data regarding the amount and impact of plastic waste present in the oceans are also presented. Therefore, waste at sea represents a relevant impact on the natural environment and society, and that cleaning task forces, more than mitigating actions of the social and environmental impacts of waste at sea, are a way to educate society and the next generations to come to review their consumption patterns and behavior.
