Abstract

Smoking is considered one of the main factors causing illness and premature death in the world. Given this, there is an evident importance in new drugs that will expand the therapeutic arsenal in its treatment. Varenicline has been widely studied as a key medication for smoking cessation, and although not so new on the market, it is still not known by the majority. Taking into account the benefits of this drug, the objective of this work was to review in the literature its pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic system of action, as well as its clinical use and efficacy. A bibliographic survey was carried out in PubMed and Scielo Direct databases between the years 2004 to 2020. The results presented varenicline as an effective anti-smoking medication, not only for smoking cessation, but also in the administration of abstinence. It presents with good tolerability in relation to adverse effects and promotes superior efficacy when compared to other medications in the same follow-up.
