Abstract

The present work aimed to develop a discussion about linguistic variations to discuss linguistic prejudice and understand the influence of Portuguese language teaching in combating this prejudice. For this, the bibliographic review was used as a methodology, where works by authors dealing with this topic were analyzed. Assuming that it is the school's duty, which has the function of forming critical, reflective and sociable citizens, in addition to providing scientific knowledge, students' awareness of the many variations of language, showing that there are different ways of expressing themselves and that these ways depend on social, historical and geographical factors, the Portuguese teacher has the duty to show students that there are other linguistic manifestations that are formed within the culture and customs of each one, although there is a privileged norm - cultured norm. The main way to end linguistic discrimination regarding these other manifestations of language, like any other form of discrimination and prejudice, is knowledge, in this case, knowledge and awareness about the variety of language manifestations, which must be respected so that one can address linguistic segregation.
