Abstract

The present research has as its theme the acquisition of foreign language, especially within the context of the international migrant. The general objective of the research is to analyze how foreign language acquisition takes place, especially within the context of the international migrant. The research is justified in the face of the challenges of international migrants in acquiring a foreign language, and how this impacts their relationship with their national identity and their Heritage Language. The research was carried out as a literature review. The articles were searched on the Scielo and Google Scholar platforms, using the following descriptors: “Foreign Language”, “International migrant” and “Learning”, associated with the Boolean operator AND. Articles written between 2012 and 2021 were searched. Articles written in Portuguese were chosen, and those written in other languages were discarded. It was possible to conclude that it is exhausting for the migrant to be inserted in a foreign society; in the midst of this process, acquiring a new language can be a difficult task, depending on a support network and overcoming negative feelings such as xenophobia and prejudice. Thus, it is essential to build support networks for international migrants, so that these individuals experience greater success in acquiring a foreign language, acclimating to the new reality and dealing with the challenges of this process.
