The study aimed to understand the onset of autism as well as the impacts and implications on the family of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This research adopted the qualitative bibliographic approach through the reading of documents such as Laws, books, journals and scientific articles, seeking to know from a theoretical point of view, how the studies have addressed the expectations of the family in relation to a member with the diagnosis of autism, the psychosocial implications of autism in the mother's life, in addition to the search and identification of coping strategies of the difficulties experienced by these individuals. In view of the analysis, it is concluded that autism despite several advances, is difficult to diagnose, because each case has its peculiarities. Therefore, it is necessary to know the common characteristics of the same (individual) in so that one can have the diagnosis and specialized treatment. Thus, supporting the family in coping with the impacts and difficulties faced by all members is necessary. Therefore, the family adaptation to this context depends on many variables, not occurring in a linear and progressive way. Thus, the development of interventional practices, in order to make families aware of the importance of accepting the diagnosis of autism is of fundamental importance to help the family to have a more harmonious coexistence, seeking to face and overcome the different existing difficulties.
