THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND PROMOTION OF ORAL HEALTH IN BRAZIL: ADVANCES AND CHALLENGES

Brazil is a developing country, which has several obstacles in promoting oral health. However, there are several national public policies implemented over the last 50 years to implement and increase oral health promotion for the population. The general objective of this paper is to explain the direct relationship between public health and oral health promotion in the Brazilian population. Among the specific objectives are: to contextualize public health applied to dentistry historically and contemporaneously; to analyze the effectiveness of public health in oral health; the effectiveness of public policies in promoting oral health. Regarding the methodology used, research was carried out on the main health platforms Virtual Health Library (BVS), PubMed, Google Scholar and SciELO using the Boolean operators PUBLIC HEALTH /+/ HISTORY, PUBLIC HEALTH /+/ DENTISTRY, PUBLIC HEALTH /+/ BRAZIL; as well as visits to university library collections, presenting results in Portuguese and English.
