USE OF METHYLPHENIDATE FOR ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT

Methylphenidate is approved for use in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Narcolepsy, however, it has been widely used for non-therapeutic purposes. In this context, the objective of the article is to present research on the use of Ritalin (methylphenidate) by university students to improve cognitive performance in the academic environment and also to gather data on the motivations, expectations, effects and harm of non-prescription use of methylphenidate. by university students, through a literature review with an exploratory and descriptive approach, in which searches were carried out in digital databases such as: SCieLo Pubmed, LIlacs and Google academic. The results demonstrate that methylphenidate is the most consumed psychostimulant in the world, with pharmacological characteristics similar to amphetamines, therefore with potential for abuse. Its off-label uses include as a treatment for fatigue in cancer patients, refractory depression in the geriatric population, apathy in Alzheimer's disease, and to improve cognitive performance. In view of this, students have used it for self-medication, through the recommendation of friends to improve concentration, alertness and academic performance, or for recreational purposes, which the highest percentage of consumption is noticed in medical students, in addition, Consumption pattern varies according to the prevalence of consumption and the period of the course. Therefore, health education promotion strategies for the rational use of medication are essential.
