Communication is an important and relevant task in any period of life. Its effectiveness guarantees better performance in the care process, in the sharing of knowledge and skills. This work aims to analyze in the literature how the communication process between the nursing team and the companion occurs during pediatric hospitalization, in studies published from 2017 to 2020. This is an integrative, descriptive, qualitative Literature Review, with the aim of reviewing, analyzing and summarizing the results of studies on the investigated topic. Searches were carried out on the Virtual Health Library (VHL) portal, from 2017 to 2020. For the analysis of qualitative data, Bardin's content analysis was used as a basis. Nine articles were selected for discussion, all in Portuguese and in Brazil, written by nursing professionals and published predominantly in nursing journals. The articles chosen generally analyzed how communication directly interferes in the care provided, and how its absence impairs the understanding of actions, safety, and interaction between the nursing team and companion in the child's recovery. The nursing team, even with its demands and attributions, must be prepared and trained for the real needs of the process, in order to provide quality care, understanding that the companion is a fundamental part of care.
