WHEN ALCOHOL MEETS AUTISM AND ADHD: IMMEDIATE RELIEF AND AMPLIFIED HARM IN A CASE STUDY

Abstract

This article analyzes the implications of alcohol use in the life of an autistic adult with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxious and depressive distress, trauma, and a history of treatment for alcohol dependence. Its central question is: what happens when alcohol affects functions that already demand substantial effort, such as attention, inhibition, awareness of internal states, emotional regulation, social interaction, and recovery from overload? This qualitative case study draws on a neuropsychological report, a technical report, and an autobiographical narrative. The review prioritizes studies of alcohol use among people with co-occurring autism and ADHD, as well as studies of autistic adults who drink. The analysis follows three periods: preceding tensions, effects sought during drinking, and subsequent harm. The narrative describes alcohol as a means of numbing loneliness, distress, and helplessness, while also locating drinking within experiences of belonging involving music, bars, and groups of friends. It records a period of daily use, blackouts, sleeping in a car on public roads, risky decisions, spending, work impairment, conflict, and housing loss. Recent research identifies more frequent drunkenness, anxiety-related regretted episodes, mixing alcohol with medication or other drugs, emergency treatment, and a greater desire to reduce drinking among people with co-occurring autism and ADHD. Psychoanalysis helps explain relief and repetition. Schizoanalysis situates drinking within a network of body, relationships, places, alcohol availability, work, and belonging. The case indicates converging risks: alcohol impairs functions that are already strained and can intensify the distress it initially relieved.
