Abstract

This study analyzes domestic and family violence against women, focusing on the effectiveness of Law No. 11,340/2006 (Maria da Penha Law) in combating gender-based violence in Brazil. The research aims to understand the legal protection mechanisms provided by the legislation, especially emergency protective measures, as well as to assess their practical application and the challenges related to their enforcement, with special attention to the context of Rio Grande do Norte. The methodology is based on bibliographic and documentary research, including analysis of legal doctrine, legislation, and institutional data on domestic violence. The findings indicate that, although the Maria da Penha Law represents a significant advancement in the Brazilian legal system, there are still obstacles to its effectiveness, such as delays in granting protective measures, underreporting of cases, and difficulties in monitoring compliance with judicial decisions. It is concluded that, despite normative and institutional progress, the full effectiveness of the law depends on strengthening protection networks, integrated action among public agencies, and greater social awareness of gender-based violence.
