Mental health directly impacts society and the emotional quality of life of human beings. It is important to distinguish mental health from mental disorders, although both are related. Mental health refers to the general state of mental well-being, while a mental disorder is a diagnosable condition, such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and other dementias, that can impair daily functioning but can be managed with appropriate treatment. Intellectual disability has significant limitations in a person's intellectual and behavioral functioning, causing mental suffering. There are several conditions that affect mental health. The influencing factors can be biological (related to genetics), psychological (due to trauma, self-esteem, personality, depression), and social (related to family environment, work, relationships, violence, among others). The main mental disorders are: Anxiety disorders, Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Panic disorder, Phobias, Social anxiety disorder, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Mood disorders, Bipolar affective disorder, Psychotic disorders (schizophrenia), Eating disorders (bulimia, anorexia), and Neurodevelopmental disorders. There is no specific cure, but rather treatments to alleviate a person's mental suffering, such as medication and therapy, depending on the degree of impairment in more severe cases, such as schizophrenia and other dementias, which can impair daily functioning but can be managed with appropriate treatment and generally require lifelong support.
