Mentoring is fundamental to academic medicine and its missions, having long played a crucial role in the training and career development of physicians and scientists. A growing body of literature has documented the positive impact of mentoring on various outcomes. The aim of this article is to discuss mentoring in the medical field regarding its achievements and challenges. This is an integrative review of a descriptive and exploratory nature, with an emphasis on publications produced in the last five years. The Virtual Health Library (VHL) was consulted, including the LILACS, MEDLINE, and IBECS databases, the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS), and the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The SciELO and PubMed databases were also consulted. Effective mentoring has demonstrated many benefits for mentors, mentees, and their institutions, thus becoming a pillar of medical professional development.
