Endodontics aims primarily to eliminate microbial loads present in root canals. Successful endodontic treatment depends on the excellent completion of several factors, such as efficient chemomechanical preparation, complete canal disinfection, and hermetic obturation. However, challenges can arise during these processes due to the anatomical complexity of root canals, resulting in resistance from the remaining microorganisms. In this context, the use of lasers and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has gained prominence in endodontics, presenting themselves as adjuvant therapies to conventional treatment. This article aims to explore the indications and effectiveness of aPDT and laser therapy, understanding their mechanisms of action and discussing their results in reducing and disinfecting intracanal infections, as well as their benefits and prognoses after treatment completion.
