The Brazilian military institution plays a fundamental role in the country’s historical, political, and social development, acting not only in the defense of national sovereignty but also in the preservation of institutional stability, constitutional order, and public security. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the relevance of the military institution in Brazilian society highlighting its constitutional functions, historical importance, and contribution to the maintenance of national sovereignty, institutional stability, and public security. The methodology adopted was characterized as qualitative research of a descriptive and exploratory nature, developed through bibliographic review and documentary analysis, using books, scientific articles, legislation, and official documents related to the topic. The results obtained demonstrated that the Brazilian Armed Forces perform broad and strategic functions in the contemporary context, acting in territorial defense, combating transnational threats, carrying out law and order guarantee operations, humanitarian actions, and support activities for society during emergency situations. It was also observed that, although the Armed Forces have high relevance for national sovereignty and state security, their actions must remain aligned with democratic principles and constitutional limits established by the Federal Constitution of 1988. Therefore, it is concluded that military institutions have strategic importance for contemporary Brazil, contributing significantly to the protection of national sovereignty and the democratic stability of the country.
