This commentary aims to analyze the benefits of teaching History, and more specifically, the Middle Ages, using an innovative methodology for Brazilian children: critical analysis of historical sources, which seeks to explore the explicit and implicit opinions of different characters from the medieval period about the experiences they lived through and make them more relatable to students. As an example of a historical source to be explored, The Song of Roland, a poem from the time of the Crusades, a period marked by both physical and imagined wars between Christians and Muslims, will undergo contextualization and investigation so that its information can be used to assess the historical period in which it was composed.
