This article aimed to discuss the indiscriminate consumption of psychoactive substances, including psychotropic medications, which represents a significant global public health problem, with physical, mental, and social impacts. Despite their therapeutic importance, inappropriate use has increased, especially among university students, who are more vulnerable due to factors such as academic stress, lifestyle changes, family distancing, and emotional overload. In this context, the non-prescribed use of drugs such as methylphenidate stands out, associated with the pursuit of improved academic performance, characterizing a process of medicalization. The present study aimed to analyze the prevalence of psychotropic drug abuse among university students in Brazil, as well as its associated factors and impacts. This is an integrative literature review conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases, resulting in the analysis of 12 studies. The results show a high prevalence of psychoactive substance use, often related to coping with stress and anxiety, as well as behaviors such as self-medication and sleep deprivation. It is concluded that psychotropic drug abuse is increasing and concerning, highlighting the need for greater institutional attention and mental health promotion policies.
