Smoking has deep historical roots, having been associated with different social and cultural contexts throughout time, which contributed to its widespread global dissemination. With the increase in the number of smokers and related diseases, control measures were implemented that resulted in a reduction in the consumption of conventional cigarettes. In this scenario, electronic cigarettes emerge as an alternative, initially associated with harm reduction, but which have been gaining acceptance, especially among young people and non-smokers, despite evidence pointing to health risks. This study aimed to analyze the knowledge and use of these devices, considering previous smoking and cohabitation with smokers. This is a descriptive field research with a quantitative approach, carried out with 210 adult individuals in a large municipality in Minas Gerais. The results indicate that curiosity is the main reason for starting to use them, while concern for health stands out as the main factor in non-adherence. In addition, the social context proved relevant in influencing usage behavior. It is concluded that there is a need for more comprehensive prevention strategies, especially aimed at the most vulnerable groups.
