Abstract

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) is a chronic non-communicable disease of high worldwide prevalence, characterized by insulin resistance and progressive dysfunction of pancreatic β cells, resulting in persistent hyperglycemia and risk of complications, such as cardiovascular diseases, nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy. Given the increase in cases and difficulties in long-term glycemic control, the pharmacist's performance stands out as a relevant strategy in clinical management, contributing to the rational use of drugs, therapeutic adherence and improvement of quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the contribution of pharmaceutical care in the management of DM2, with emphasis on adherence to treatment, glycemic control and prevention of complications. This is a qualitative research, with a descriptive approach, developed through a bibliographic review of articles published between 2020 and 2025, in the SciELO, LILACS and PubMed databases, using the descriptors "pharmaceutical care", "adhesion to treatment" and "glycemic control". The studies were analyzed descriptively, highlighting the main findings. The results showed that the pharmacist's performance improves therapeutic adherence, reduces glycated hemoglobin levels, prevents complications and promotes quality of life, reinforcing his essential role in the care of patients with DM2 in the context of primary health care.
