This study aims to understand the impact of cognitive distortions on romantic relationships from the perspective of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), justified by the frequent occurrence of relational conflicts associated with failures in communication and interpretation of reality. The specific objectives are to analyze contemporary relationship dynamics, identify dysfunctional thinking patterns—such as mind reading, personalization, catastrophizing, and dichotomous thinking—and investigate their influence on affective bonds. This is a theoretical study conducted through a narrative literature review, based on classical authors of the cognitive-behavioral approach, such as Aaron Beck and Judith Beck, as well as contemporary studies on relationships and CBT. The study maps, based on the literature, the main types of cognitive distortions present in romantic relationships and their impact on communication. The results indicate that these distortions promote misinterpretations, hinder conflict resolution, and contribute to cycles of frustration and emotional distancing. It is concluded that CBT offers effective strategies for identifying and restructuring these patterns, promoting more assertive communication and healthier relationships.
