Hand hygiene is recognized as one of the most effective and fundamental measures in preventing healthcare-associated infections, especially in intensive care units. This study aimed to analyze the importance of proper and frequent hand hygiene practices by healthcare professionals, highlighting its direct contribution to reducing the transmission of microorganisms and promoting patient safety. This is a qualitative, descriptive study conducted through a literature review. Scientific articles, manuals, and updated guidelines addressing the topic were used, with an emphasis on professionals' adherence to recommended practices. The results showed that, despite the recognition of the relevance of this measure, there are still shortcomings in its implementation, frequently related to work overload, lack of adequate supplies, and a deficit in professional awareness. Therefore, the importance of implementing permanent educational strategies and continuous monitoring to improve the quality of care provided is highlighted. In conclusion, hand hygiene is a simple yet essential action that significantly contributes to reducing infections, promoting safe, humane, and effective care at all levels of attention, and strengthening professional practice and clinical outcomes.
