This paper considers the issue of drug abuse in the population of persons serving deprivation of liberty and the supposed causes of this use related to the context of contemporary society. The emphasis are the questions about the addiction to psychoactive substance and its multiple repercussions. The protection and care for the mental health of this population is a priority in this study. The objective includes knowing how society and institutions are linked with the consumption of crack and other drugs phenomenon relating situations in Rio Grande do Sul in order to build forms of assistance in the search for proposals to contribute to the development of the criminal treatment.
