This article sought to investigate the factors that possibly contribute to the high retention rates in the General and Inorganic Chemistry discipline at BICT/UFMA. Based on the analysis of institutional data and a questionnaire administered to failed students, the main causes identified were difficulties with the content, the accumulation of subjects, and low adherence to support strategies, among others. This preliminary analysis may guide teachers, students, and the institution in developing strategies to change this reality.
