Abstract

The observation period took place at the Bethânia Community, a philanthropic institution founded in 1995 by Father Léo Tarcísio Gonçalves Pereira, with the purpose of welcoming people in situations of social vulnerability, especially those with substance abuse problems, offering them an environment of spirituality, work, and personal reconstruction. During the experience, a structured and disciplined routine was observed, beginning at 6:50 am with prayers, followed by daily activities such as baking, cleaning, caring for animals and plants, and art and painting workshops. Spirituality is experienced freely, being perceived as a means of inner healing. The "children," as those welcomed are called, demonstrate satisfaction and a sense of belonging to the retreat, reporting that the discipline and welcoming atmosphere help them in the recovery process and in the reconstruction of values. Many express fear of returning to life in society, but recognize the importance of the welcoming environment and the support received. The theoretical foundation highlights that Bethânia is based on the biblical inspiration of the siblings Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, representing acceptance, love, and service. The community does not define itself as a clinic, but as a home where recovery occurs holistically—physically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually. The liberation process is gradual and requires patience, discipline, faith, and family support. Thus, the Bethânia Community is consolidated as a space for new beginnings and transformation, focused on restoring human dignity and the social reintegration of those welcomed.
