This research aims to analyze the challenges and possibilities of literacy in the early years of elementary school. Based on a bibliographical research with a qualitative approach and descriptive nature, the investigation is based on classic and contemporary authors such as Ferreiro and Teberosky (1999), Soares (2021), Morais (2012), Vygotsky (1998), in addition to official documents such as the National Common Curricular Base (BRASIL, 2017). The results of the analysis indicate that the main challenges involve the heterogeneity of classes, the initial and continuing training of teachers, the lack of pedagogical resources, socioeconomic inequalities and that to face them it is necessary to adopt a student-centered methodology, considering their learning process in a concrete way where they can experience and significantly build their literacy and literacy skills.
