The use of weight-control medications has grown significantly in recent years, driven by both aesthetic and health concerns. Among these medications, sibutramine stands out for its potential efficacy, but also for the risks associated with its inappropriate use. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the risks and impacts arising from the misuse of sibutramine, considering its clinical and pharmacological effects, and public health implications. The methodological process is integrative bibliographic, using a quantitative-descriptive method, selecting articles and studies related to the study topic from the last ten years across different scientific platforms, using the following descriptors: sibutramine; misuse; risks; impacts; public health. The study showed that sibutramine can be a therapeutic alternative for obesity, but presents significant risks when used indiscriminately. Self-medication, aesthetic pursuits, and the influence of digital media exacerbate the problem, especially due to its adverse effects on the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, requiring clinical monitoring. Its effectiveness depends on its combination with lifestyle changes, such as proper nutrition and physical activity, and is not a stand-alone solution. Furthermore, there is a need to strengthen the regulation and oversight of anorectics, with pharmacists and the multidisciplinary team playing a key role in providing guidance and rational use of the medication.
