Abstract

Medical residency is a period of intense training and professional development for physicians, characterized by on-the-job training that exposes residents to a high-demand environment, human suffering, and complex decision-making. While the traditional focus is on technical and clinical skills, leadership training is crucial for these professionals to not only manage teams and processes but also to address the psychosocial challenges inherent in hospital practice. This article explores the impact of medical leadership training during hospital residency, analyzing the challenges faced by residents, the role of preceptorship and the institution, and strategies for developing leadership competencies. It will address how exposure to high-responsibility situations and the need for effective communication, teamwork, and professionalism are pillars for building robust medical leadership capable of promoting the humanization of care and the well-being of the professional themselves.
