Abstract

The Maria da Penha Law represented a fundamental milestone in combating domestic violence in Brazil, establishing mechanisms to protect women, expanding protective measures, and encouraging the creation of public policies aimed at preventing and supporting victims. Since its enactment, there have been important advances, such as greater social visibility of the problem, strengthening support networks, and increased awareness of women's rights. However, significant challenges persist, including structural inequality between regions, difficulty accessing specialized services in remote areas, and cultural barriers that perpetuate sexist practices. This study aims to analyze the advances and challenges of the Maria da Penha Law in combating domestic violence in Brazil, verifying its effectiveness in protecting women and reducing violence rates. A literature review methodology is used to understand the historical, legal, and social context, as well as to identify gaps in law enforcement. The conclusion is that, although the law has contributed to important changes, there is still a need to strengthen public policies, invest in infrastructure, and promote cultural changes to ensure greater effectiveness in combating domestic violence.
