Acute respiratory failure is the failure of the respiratory system to perform gas exchanges, being a frequent cause of hospitalization and with multiple etiologies. Objective: To describe, by literature review, the performance of Physiotherapy in the use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) to reduce orotracheal intubations in patients with acute respiratory failure in urgency and emergency. Methodology: Integrative review (2020–2025) in the Google Academic, SciELO and PubMed databases, including studies in Portuguese, English and Spanish on acute respiratory failure, urgency, physiotherapy and NIV. Works outside the period, in other languages or unrelated to the theme were excluded. IA was used only for textual review. Results: 65 articles and 5 books were analyzed; 45 were excluded. 20 articles were included (12 for contextualization and 8 for discussion). Conclusion: IRpA has multiple causes and is common in the emergency room; NIV reduces intubations when applied early; and Physiotherapy is essential to reduce complications, hospitalization time and costs.
