This article analyzes the use of antibiotics in dentistry as an indispensable element for the promotion of oral health. Through an exploratory-descriptive literature review, the main effects of the use of antibiotics on the promotion of oral health are examined as a general objective. The specific objectives used were: to identify the main antibiotics used in dentistry, to address the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in dentistry and to raise the main problems related to the misuse of antibiotics for oral health. The study highlights that amoxicillin is the most clinically prescribed drug and the importance of prophylactic antibiotic use to avoid infective endocarditis. Finally, the importance of the rational use of antibiotics to prevent bacteriological resistance and preserve patient safety and public health is reiterated.
