Penectomy is a surgical technique used in veterinary medicine that involves the partial or total amputation of the penis in cattle, commonly associated with urethrostomy. This procedure is mainly indicated in cases of urethral obstruction caused by urolithiasis, as well as severe traumatic injuries, penile neoplasms, urethral fistulas, chronic inflammations, and irreversible paraphimosis. Urethrostomy allows the redirection of the urethra to a new opening, enabling urine elimination after penis removal. Urethral obstruction is more frequent in steers due to the relatively smaller diameter of their urethra, which facilitates the retention of calculi. If left untreated, this condition can lead to complications such as urethral rupture and uroperitoneum. Understanding the anatomy and physiology of the bovine urinary system is essential for surgical success and proper management of affected animals. The main goal of penectomy is to ensure animal welfare by preventing pain, secondary infections, and systemic compromise, while allowing the animal to be finished for slaughter when reproduction is no longer a priority.
