Introduction: Breastfeeding is recognized as the ideal nourishment for newborns, providing essential nutrients and immunity. Despite its widely documented benefits, the practice still faces challenges, such as pain, nipple fissures, and mastitis, which can compromise continued breastfeeding. Public policies and nursing care are essential to support mothers and prevent complications. Objective: To report the author's personal experience during the breastfeeding period, identifying the difficulties faced and analyzing the nursing team's role in the clinical management of lactation. Report: During the postpartum period, the author experienced fissures, nipple engorgement, and episodes of mastitis, despite adopting appropriate latching techniques. Nursing support, through guidance on positioning, proper latch, and management of complications, was crucial for maintaining exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months, in addition to enabling continued breastfeeding for up to two years of age. The report highlights the emotional and physical impact of the process, highlighting the importance of clear information and ongoing monitoring. Discussion: Successful breastfeeding depends on a combination of technical knowledge, emotional support, and health education. Nursing interventions, such as preventing fissures, correcting latch, providing guidance on maternal diet, and encouraging family participation, contribute to reducing early weaning and preventing complications. Professional interventions strengthen maternal confidence, demystify mistaken cultural beliefs, and ensure safe care for mother and baby. Conclusion: The experience demonstrates that breastfeeding is a complex process, marked by physical and emotional challenges. Qualified nursing support, combined with family participation and public policies, is essential to promote safe, healthy breastfeeding that strengthens the mother-baby bond.
