Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in dogs, also known as disc herniation, is the main neurological condition that affects the spinal cord in dogs, especially in chondrodystrophic breeds. The spinal compression, IVDD can cause several clinical manifestations such as pain, ataxia, decreased or absent proprioception, para/tetraplegia, among others. There are three common types of hernias: Hansen type I (extrusion) and type II (protrusion), and type III, which occurs less frequently and is characterized by a violent concussion of the spinal cord. This study aims to conduct a brief review of the literature on intervertebral disc disease in dogs, analyzing the anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment options and prognosis.
