Abstract

Introduction: Addressing the mental health of nurses working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) requires a broad and integrated approach that involves not only individual care actions but also structural changes in institutional policies and working conditions. Valuing nursing professionals, respecting their limits, and encouraging self-care should be central pillars of any intervention proposal. Understanding the psychosocial challenges and impacts experienced by these professionals is the first step in developing effective strategies for support and prevention of mental health disorders in the hospital environment. Methodology: This study was conducted through an integrative literature review, aiming to identify the psychosocial impacts and strategies for promoting mental health among nurses working in ICUs. The review followed the methodological steps proposed by Mendes, Silveira, and Galvão (2008), including the formulation of the research question, selection and analysis of studies in the SciELO, LILACS, BDENF, and MEDLINE/PubMed databases, using controlled descriptors. Articles published between 2020 and 2025, in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, directly addressing the topic, were included. Extracted data were organized and analyzed descriptively and categorically, allowing a synthesis of existing knowledge and contributing to the development of practices and policies aimed at the psychological well-being of ICU nursing professionals. Results and discussion: Nurses working in ICUs face a highly complex and demanding environment, making them vulnerable to disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression, and Burnout, highlighting the need for institutional support strategies and professional recognition to preserve their mental health and the quality of care. Conclusion: ICU nurses face intense demands that impact their mental health, making it urgent to adopt institutional policies and actions that promote psychological protection, professional recognition, and improved working conditions.
