This study aimed to investigate the main causes, consequences, and physiotherapeutic strategies for rehabilitation and prevention of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in athletes, in order to support practices that reduce their incidence and promote a safe return to sport. This is a narrative review with a descriptive-exploratory design, conducted in the Virtual Health Library between February and September 2025, resulting in the selection of seven articles published in Portuguese between 2020 and 2025. The analysis demonstrated that ACL ruptures result from biomechanical, anatomical, and external factors, with significant physical and emotional impacts, including pain, joint instability, anxiety, and the risk of early osteoarthritis. Rehabilitation requires individualized protocols, emphasizing muscle strengthening, proprioceptive training, and motor reeducation, while preventive programs demonstrate effectiveness in reducing recurrences. It is concluded that evidence-based physiotherapy is essential for functional recovery, the prevention of new injuries and the promotion of safe and sustainable sports practice.
