Abstract

Occupational exposure to fine dust is one of the main health risks in work environments, especially in the industrial and construction sectors. Gypsum dust (CaSO₄·2H₂O), although chemically stable, generates respirable particles during cutting, sanding, and application processes, which may compromise workers’ health in poorly ventilated environments and in the absence of effective control measures. This article aimed to technically analyze occupational exposure to gypsum dust in light of Regulatory Standard NR 6, focusing on the use, limitations, and effectiveness of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). For this study, normative sources, current legislation, technical reports, and scientific articles related to gypsum dust exposure were reviewed. This survey was compared with the requirements established by NR 6 to assess the role of PPE and its practical limitations. The findings identified the main risk conditions associated with gypsum handling in work settings, evaluated the adequacy of PPE recommended by NR 6, and highlighted the need for complementary prevention strategies, such as engineering controls and occupational risk management policies. The analysis demonstrated that the exclusive use of PPE does not provide full protection for workers exposed to gypsum dust. The integration of collective control measures, combined with continuous training and compliance with legal requirements, emerges as an essential strategy for safeguarding occupational health.
