THE USE OF CARTOGRAPHY IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Abstract

This article intends to address the use of cartography in Environmental Education, considered as a pedagogical strategy that aims to promote the understanding of geographic space and its relations with the environment, through the graphic and visual representation of information and data related to the natural and social environment. Cartography is a discipline that studies the representation, analysis and interpretation of geographic space through maps, charts and other forms of graphic representation. In Environmental Education, cartography can be used as a tool to promote awareness, awareness and education of students on environmental issues, such as nature conservation, natural resource management, identification of degraded areas, analysis of environmental impacts, the understanding of ecosystems, among other topics. In this sense, the general objective of the article is to analyze how cartography can be used in the context of Environmental Education, with a view to identifying the possibilities for applying this discipline. The methodology of bibliographic research is used, which consists of searching, selecting and analyzing works and materials already published on a given topic or research problem. As a result of the research, it was verified that the use of cartography in Environmental Education can contribute to the development of reading skills and interpretation of the geographic space, the understanding of the relations between the environment and society, the promotion of a critical sense and the awareness of environmental issues.
