THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE TRANSLATION OF THE ESSAY A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN BY VERA RIBEIRO, FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF CORPUS LINGUISTICS

Abstract

The aim of this article was to analyze the representation of the female gender in the essay A Room of One’s Own, translated into Portuguese in 1985 by Vera Ribeiro, in order to identify possible traces of emphasis or erasure of women in the corpus, based on lexical analysis. To this end, the methodology used was based on both quantitative and qualitative procedures. In this context, the software WordSmith Tools 6.0 (Scott, 2012) was used to examine gender representation through ten lexical items found in the translated work. As a result, possible signs of gender emphasis were identified, particularly in relation to terms associated with the feminine in the corpus, although only partially. In one occurrence, gender neutralization was observed, whereas in other passages, some translational choices appear to consider the stylistics of the Portuguese language, contributing to textual cohesion without necessarily erasing the female figure.
