This review article proposes a theoretical reflection on the intersection between environmental education, sustainability and the Teaching of Sciences through Inquiry (EnCI) with the aim of contributing to the development of didactic strategies that value the development of sustainable educational and socio-environmental actions. The theoretical reflection was based on the qualitative analysis of 14 (fourteen) scientific articles from in-depth reading using the theoretical-methodological foundations of Bardin's Content Analysis. As a result, we highlight the indication of teacher training related to the development of critical environmental education, under the theoretical contribution of EnCI, with the aim of promoting integration between Basic Education and universities, with the development of pedagogical practices that contemplate the diversity of educational and socio-environmental contexts. Finally, the analysis of the 14 articles revealed a consensus among the authors on the importance of working on the theme of sustainability through methodological resources such as investigative teaching sequences, thus promoting the problematization of a critical, reflective and citizen-oriented environmental education.
