Endodontics is an area of dentistry that requires a broad visual spectrum. Therefore, technologies such as the use of operating microscopy have been developed, which offers benefits in root canal treatment. The objective of this study is to review the literature on the benefits of using a microscope in root canal treatment. The research was carried out in the electronic databases Scielo and PubMed, using the keywords ‘‘Endodontics’’; ‘‘Microscopy”; Root canals’’. Thirteen publications in English and Portuguese that addressed the chosen subject were selected. Articles that did not correspond to the theme were excluded. Then, it was found through bibliographic research that microscopy applied in endodontics increases the quality of visualization and illumination of root canals, facilitating the execution of treatment by the professional. Therefore, the use of operative microscopy in endodontics represents an advance in clinical practice, as it provides better identification of root canals, anatomical details, removal of filling materials, aids in the removal of fractured instruments, better visibility in the closure of perforations, visualization of accessory and calcified canals, and more conservative and safe treatment. Thus, successful treatment and a good prognosis of cases are achieved, avoiding failures in endodontic therapy.
